3 Pre-Poo Treatments for Locs

Dare I say— a pre-poo treatment for locs is a must! This is how you can remove stubborn build up at the roots and get your shampoo to lather on the first application. So you can imagine how surprised I was to hear over 70% of my IG family does not use a pre-cleanse on their locs. For the record, I was shocked! However, a few of my favorite Loctician’s chimed in about how much they love pre-cleansing and that made me happy.

Nicole of A Distinct Image, who is a Loc Care Specialist, mentioned “over the years I’ve noticed my clients experience deeper cleanses, less scalp irritation and lighter hair weight” when I asked why she pre-cleanses locs. I completely agree, which is why I use a pre-cleanse on my own locs and on my guests in the salon. So in case you have not had the pleasure of doing a pre-poo treatment on your locs, let me share with you a few of my favorites.

Pre-Poo Treatments for Locs

The purpose of the pre-cleanse is to help dissolve oils, buildup, flakes and any other debris that may have become trapped in the locs. This helps your shampoo work better and as a result you have cleaner locs and don’t have to shampoo fifty11 times. Here are a few of my favorites:

Dr. Locs Pre-Cleanse

The Dr. Locs Pre-cleanse is a very gentle pre-poo treatment for locs that does exactly what it says it will. According to the Dr. Locs website, the Pre-Cleanse is formulated to “remove trapped oil, dirt, and product build-up from the scalp and new growth area.” And like I shared in the Dr. Locs Product Line review, it is one of the most effective solutions that I’ve seen for treating build up in locs and excessive dandruff on the scalp!

Noggin Oil Wash

The Noggin Oil “Wash” is the pre-poo treatment that I use on my locs most often. I find that the “Wash” keeps my locs feeling light and it helps to dissolve all types of buildup. The Noggin Oil website says that the “Wash” is made to lift away impurities, sebum, dirt, perspiration and pollution from scalp.

When I asked one of the Co-Founders of Noggin Oil, Brian, why the “Wash” was created, he said “while training  for the NYC marathon in 2015, I came up with the idea of spraying a light cleanser on my scalp and wiping off to remove perspiration and dirt. I had been washing my locs too often which resulted in weak spots and breakage.” Nobody wants their locs breaking off and everybody wants a clean scalp— if you agree check out the Noggin Oil “Wash”.

Another Loctician that really focuses on healthy hair, Beverly of BQuality Locs, stated that “besides removing the buildup, dandruff, environmental grime etc on the scalp and hair and paring it with a scalp massage to loosen the dirt etc, you’re also increasing the blood flow to the scalp”. I love a multi-functional product and the next pre-cleanse for locs has so many benefits.

Adiva Naturals ACV Herbal Clarifying Rinse

The Adiva Naturals ACV Herbal Clarifying Rinse is a pre-cleanse that I discovered years ago and I remember it working very well. Their website boasts about the ACV Clarifying Rinse being “an excellent dissolving agent for locs with build up.” Given that “it effectively dissolves the build up and product residue. It also keeps your your hair clean and fresh in between shampoos.” In addition, the ACV Herbal Clarifying Rinse balances the pH of the scalp and is great for scalp treatments.

It’s really a different level of clean when you start your shampoo with a pre-cleanse. Let me know in the comments which pre-poo treatment for your locs you use.
