My birthday just passed and like every solar return it makes me want to switch things up. However, this time, unlike any other time, I wanted to try a new hairstyle. If you’ve been following my journey for any stretch of time, you already know hairstyling is not my thing. Even in the salon, when guest’s come in desiring styles with little to no input, I promptly tell them “I’m not your person, at least give me a picture!” So cue the picture I found that inspired my latest hairstyle…
Hairstyle Inspired by The Big Chop
I’d like to guess that you’ve heard of “the big chop”. If you haven’t or if the lingo has changed since I entered the natural hair movement (over a decade ago), “the big chop” refers to when someone cuts, or chops, off all their hair. Ya’ll know that I am good for combing out my locs! However I’ve had this current set of locs for almost 6 years— I’m trying to stay strong! My locks are mid back in length and all 14+ inches can be a lot sometimes. So while scrolling on Instagram (before they shutdown my account 🙄) I noticed that people with similar or longer lengths were all doing one style— Loc Knots! So I decided to give it a try.
My First Set of Loc Knots
After washing and conditioning my hair, nearly a month since my last cleanse [click here to find out why that happened], I began to put in the loc knots. I started in the front so that I could get the hang of it. After about 7 Loc Knots, I hated how they looked and was ready to take them down. I figured doing just 20% of my head was enough to gauge the whole style. I was so wrong. Which is crazy because when I am styling my clients’ locs I always remind them not to judge the process, and wait to see it at the end. Or I’ll turn them away from the mirror. Yet, here I was judging what I saw before I got to the end. Thankfully, Hubby popped into the bathroom and complimented the 7 curly fries I had in. It was just the boost I needed to keep going. And guess what?! I loved it in the end!
Never mind that my sisterfriend said that I look like the real life version of Allegra, from Allegra’s window, lol! I’ve been confidently rocking this style for a week and there are definitely pros and cons to it— more on that next week. All I know is that it felt great to switch it up, especially going into my New Year!
When was the last time you switched up your style?
