You would think creating a loc bun would be a no brainer, but to my surprise it was actually challenging. Years ago when I was asked by a guest in the salon — how do you get a messy locs bun— , unknowingly I said “it’s easy!” My response then was based on my barely shoulder length locs being cooperative. I, at that time, assumed that you just use a hair tie and wrap the hair around. Fast forward, to my locs reaching past my bra length and I’ve been trying for a very long time, to no avail, to get my locs into a quick mess bun. But guess what?! I FINALLY figured out how to do it… one random morning when all my hair ties escaped me. And typically those random styles are hard to recreate, but I’ve been doing the same thing for weeks and it works so I had to share. In this easy to follow loc bun tutorial I will show you how to create a loc bun using just one hair tie.
HOW TO PUT LOCS IN A BUN
To get started with your loc bun updo, you will need at least 1 hair tie. The type of hair tie that you choose does matter— especially if you have fine hair. Personally, I’ve found the Snapee Hair Tie to work best for creating loc bun styles. However, you can check out the article I shared on the different hair ties for locs to find which will work best for you. After you have your hair tie, you are ready to create your messy loc bun.

After you watch the loc bun tutorial, I must stress to you to let go of perfectionism. Don’t stress about making it perfect as you shape the loc bun. You can get any loose locs into the bun afterwards. You got this— give it a try!
